Help Us Rescue "Rosie"

"Rosie," was Doris "Granny D" Haddock's colorfully-painted RV which transported Granny D around the country during her drive to register working women to vote, and for her 2004 run for U.S. Senate.

Surprisingly, Rosie only recently officially became property of Open Democracy.  PACE, a group of Granny D's friends and admirers in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire, kept her in storage for several years while they looked for a museum to restore and display Rosie.   Now, in the care of Open Democracy, efforts to raise the $20,000 to $30,000 funds are now underway to restore her and properly preserve her amazing exterior artwork.

After Granny D's epic 3200-mile walk across the United States for campaign finance reform and the passage of the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act,  Doris turned her efforts to voter registration, working women in particular.   The colorful Rosie not only provided transportation and housing, but attracted attention everywhere Granny D went.

Then in 2004's U.S. Senate race, the Democratic candidate running against incumbent Judd Gregg dropped out, and Granny D stepped in to run.   Again, Rosie rose to the occasion, transporting Doris around the state for campaign events, and bringing a message of voting everywhere Doris and her staff took her.

Open Democracy, founded by Granny D, now aims to restore Rosie into roadworthy, working condition.   In a multi-year project, volunteers will be preserving and repainting her artwork, originally done by a tattoo artist and supporter of Granny D in Asheville, NC.

Among the restoration to be done:

  • Stabilize the exterior artwork
  • Repaint missing sections of paint
  • Roof and rear sheet metal repair
  • Repair or replace her engine
  • Replace water-damaged sections of the interior

Granny D was just acknowledged by USA Today as one of the ten most influential women in New Hampshire in the last century.   Now it's time to save Doris' legacy before it's too late.   Please donate below whatever you can to help us preserve Rosie, and bring Granny D's mission back on the road!
